How LASIK Corrects Vision
Problems

 |
Myopia (nearsightedness)
With myopia, the cornea is too steep (too much curvature).
Light falls in front of the retina causing blurred distant
vision. In this case, the laser is used to flatten the
cornea, which permits light to focus on the retina instead
of in front of it. |

Hyperopia (farsightedness)
With hyperopia, the cornea is too flat. Light falls behind
the retina causing both blurred near and distant vision.
The laser is used to steepen the cornea, which permits
light to focus on the retina instead of behind it. |

Astigmatism
An astigmatic cornea is irregular and egg-shaped. There
is an inability to focus any images on the retina causing
blurred or double vision at all distances. The laser scans
back and forth to reshape the cornea. |
